Nkroful, 1909   Kwame Nkrumah, whose original name was Francis Nwia Nkrumah, was born on Sept. 21, 1909, into the tiny Nzima tribe.


Nkroful is a village in the Ellembelle District, a district in the Western Region of Akanland, located near Axim in Nzema East Municipal in Western Region. Nkroful stands inland 5 km (3 miles) from the coastal highway, from the Essiama village junction turnoff.


Nkroful is famous as the birthplace of Kwame Nkrumah. Nkrumah was born there on September 21, 1909, was raised there, and on July 9, 1972 was also buried there after his death. Nkroful has the original Nkrumah Mausoleum and monument, which continues to attract visitors.


The local language spoken in Nkroful is the Akan language dialect Nzema but Fante is also spoken.

Nkrumah worked as a teacher before going to the U.S. to study literature and socialism . In 1949 he formed the Convention People's Party, which advocated nonviolent protests, strikes, and noncooperation with the British authorities. Elected prime minister of the Gold Coast (195260) and then president of independent Ghana, Nkrumah advanced a policy of Africanization and built new roads, schools, and health facilities. After 1960 he devoted much of his time to the Pan-African movement, at the expense of Ghana's economy. Following an attempted coup in 1962, withdrew from public life, increased contacts with communist countries, and wrote works on political philosophy. With support of CIA, as well of UK and France, he was overtrown in 1966 while visiting Vitnam and China.
